Clayey slate soils characterize the slopes around the Leistenberg, which offer perfect conditions for wonderfully elegant wines. The proverbial precision of Helmut Dönnhoff's wines is what fascinates when tasting these fine wines. The entry of his son Cornelius has brought a new dynamic to the winery, which is subtly expressed in the 2018 vintage. The ideas of the two really flow into the white wine based on clayey slate, which has a firm mineral grip and shows the influence of the new signature. The Riesling shows a wonderful, deep mineral note of grapefruit, apple, pineapple, blackcurrant and aromatic herbs. Crystalline fruit on the palate, again deeply mineral, full of tension, complex, expressive, with depth and a very long finish. A great wine that invites you to enjoy.

Donhoff

Oberhausen an der Nahe is an enchanted village. And yet it is precisely here that Dönnhoff, the leading company of modern German viticulture, is located. In his vineyard, Helmut Dönnhoff moves like a sovereign, aware of his value but without presumption. And he measures himself with complex business strategies for the next half century: since he envisages a lifespan of about forty years for his vines, Dönnhoff renews 1/40 of the total vineyard area every year. Thus a vineyard is made up of a third of very old vines (up to 55 years), a third newly planted, and a third of different ages. As for the taste of his wines – in addition to Riesling, he also produces Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, Dönnhoff is convinced that “sweetness needs acidity to balance fruitiness and aroma well”. The geological variety of the soils also comes out well in Dönnhoff wines: the slate soils produce aristocratic, delicate and slender whites, while the wines grown on volcanic soil are more aromatic, full-bodied, opulent and drinkable earlier than the others.
