After having almost disappeared, Lagrein began to gain more and more acceptance from consumers in the 1970s. This native and characterful wine has its roots in Bolzano and is especially popular for its velvety fullness and soft acidity. In the rosé version it is also known as Lagrein Kretzer. Intense red color. Typical aroma of berries, violets and dark chocolate on the nose. In the mouth it expresses a velvety fullness, enhanced by a soft acidity. The aromatic notes are accompanied by those of berries, fresh cherries and violets. Rich in tannins, full-bodied and fresh on the palate.
St. Pauls Winery
In the heart of the municipality of Appiano, a few kilometers from Bolzano, lies the town of San Paolo. Since the end of the 19th century, wine was sold by private winemakers both on the national and foreign markets, even as far as Moscow and St. Petersburg. Around 1900, the winemakers decided to join together in cooperatives, so as to be able to participate directly, and under better conditions, in the production and harvesting of the grapes. In 1907, the cooperative "Cantina Produttori San Paolo" was founded: 36 winemakers from San Paolo, Missiano, Monte and Riva di Sotto who participated in the founding assembly. Until 1908, the grapes from the harvest were collected in the private cellars of the town. In 1914, the cellars were equipped with modern equipment and in 1920 a Saurer brand truck was purchased, one of the first. In 1968, a fully automatic bottling plant was purchased, while in 1974 a sales point was set up in the courtyard area. In 1979/1980, a large warehouse was built in the northern area, simultaneously starting a modernization process, in line with technological processes.
